Plane Mirror

Plane mirror is a thin, flat and smooth sheet of glass having a shining coating of silver metal on one side. Silver layer is coated and protected with red paint.

Aluminium is being used instead of silver now a days as silver is costly.

A ray of light is the straight line along which light travels. Arrow head tells the direction of the light.

A bundle of rays is called " beam of light".

Reflection of Light

Process of sending back the light ray which fall in the surface of an object is called reflection of light. The object having polished shining surfaces reflect more light than object having unpolished, dull surfaces.

Chair or any other thing can be seen from all direction as light falling on it reflect or scatter in all direction because of rough surface.

Light falling on smooth surface is reflected in one direction.

Sliver metal is most reflective material. Reflection take place at the silver layer of the mirror.

Nature of Light

There two theories about the nature of light, that are Wave Theory and Particle Theory.

Wave Theory: Light consist of electromagnetic waves which do not need a material to propagate. Wavelength of visible light is 400–700 nanometres (nm).  Speed of light in vacuum s 300,000 kilometres per second.

Reflection, Refraction and diffractions (bending of light around the corner of tiny object) are explained based on wave theory of light.

Particle Theory: Light is composed of particles which travels in a strength line at very high speed.

Casting of shadow of object light and photoelectric effect explained based on particle nature of light only.

Quantum Theory of Light (Dual Nature): Light exhibits the properties of both waves and particles (depending on the situation it is in). Theory which combines both wave and particle nature of light called as quantum theory of light.

Introduction

Light is form of energy which causes sensation of sight in us to see the things around us. We see objects around us by or eyes, but eyes alone can not see the objects. We need a light source to see the objects.

Light coming from an object enters in our eyes that we are able to see that object. Light may be emitted by the object itself or object reflecting the light falling on it from other source.

Example: Sun is visible because of its own light and moon is visible because of light reflected by moon which is falling on it from the sun.

Objects which emit their own light are called Luminous Objects. Examples are sun, stars, bulb, bulbs etc.

Objects which do not emit light themselves are called Non-Luminous Objects. Examples are human, animal, furniture etc.

Light travels is a straight line and hence we see shadow of an object when light falls on it from any light source.

Welcome to DMR's Super 10th Class Notes

This is Dharmendra Kumar (DMR), a Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Indian Institute of Technology - Delhi (IIT-Delhi).

Teaching is my passion and I am teaching students for last 12+ years. I feel happy with young kids like you and I love supporting them by providing free online notes for all 10th class subjects. Let's use this blog as much as possible. You are free to ask any question related to any 10th class subject and I will try to answer your question as quickly as possible.
